Description

What is Nemaslug?

Nemaslug, is a natural organic pest control - environmentally friendly and is 100% safe for children, cats, dogs, other pets and wildlife.

It uses the nematode Phasmarhabditis californica and controls all common species of small to medium sized slugs (up to 8cm - 2.5-3 inches).

Start your slug control regime early in the growing season and you will be able to target the young slugs growing under the ground feeding on humus, developing unseen and waiting for young seedlings to be planted.

One application of Nemaslug provides 300,000 nematodes for every square metre of soil, giving around six weeks control of slugs.

How does Nemaslug work?

Nematodes attack the pest by entering natural body openings, releasing a bacteria which quickly and safely kills it. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey.

Slugs treated with Nemaslug will stop feeding in 3 days and die in about a 4-21 days (depending on the size of the slug and their exposure to the nematodes), the majority of the slugs will die underground, so don't expect to see dead slugs lying around. Plus unlike the vast majority of other controls, Nemaslug continues to work well during wet weather - exactly when you need protection against slugs.

Nemaslug® Slug Killer is a perishable, living product, so it must be used before the expiry date (which is marked on the inside of the pack and will be around 2-3 weeks) and should be stored in the fridge until it is needed.

For protection throughout the growing season consider ordering a Nemaslug Programme where we automatically send a pack every 6 weeks.

When to apply Nemaslug outdoors:

The soil temperature should be 5ºC (40ºF) or over (this is also when plants start to grow).

TIP: Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost; so don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied Nemaslug. Even if nighttime temperatures drop below 5ºC (40ºF), the soil will retain much of the daytime heat.

Slugs breed all year with two overlapping generations, the peak egg laying is Mar-Apr and Sept-Oct. Applying Nemaslug every six weeks is the best way to keep slugs at bay throughout the growing season.

TIP: Potatoes are susceptible to slug attack later in the season than most other plants. So you can delay applying Nemaslug till 6-7 weeks before harvest, when the tubers are most likely to be eaten by slugs.

What if I want to use Nemaslug in my greenhouse?

If you want to apply nematodes to your greenhouse when the outdoor soil temperature is <5ºC (40ºF) please see our underglass/indoor usage category - all nematodes featured in this section are sent 365 days a year.

Which pack size do I need?

Nemaslug comes in two pack sizes to treat small or medium gardens up to 40 sq.m (50 sq.yds) and larger gardens or allotments up to 100sqm (125 sq.yds).

To calculate your area measure the width and length of the area to be treated and multiply them by each other e.g. 4m x 10m = 40 sq.m or 5m x 8m = 40 sq.m

The Nematodes have worked really well and my Hostas have emerged with their leaves intact, and there are no worries regarding poisons in the soil.
